Donate to PBI

“If I had one-hundred dollars for every time someone told me that PBI changed their life, I could take a luxury vacation.”  Cathy Hunt, Co-Director Emeritus

PBI has been a unique event since it its founding in 1983. In a casual, inviting setting, it provides in-depth education in the book arts to practitioners at all levels and is managed entirely by volunteer co-directors. Currently, PBI is held at the OxBow School of Art in Saugatuck, MI, a beautiful facility on the water close to Lake Michigan. Since its inception, the goal has been to keep costs down for all participants and to provide scholarships so students and new professionals in the book arts can afford to attend.

The University of Iowa and then the University of Alabama, graciously provided institutional and administrative support to PBI. For many reasons, this model became unsustainable. In 2024, PBI’s co-directors moved to make PBI an independent, registered non-profit organization. Among other advantages, this change in status allows for direct, tax-deductible contributions to be made to PBI.

WHY DONATE TO PBI?

To Expand Funding For Scholarships

In the past, PBI has awarded partial scholarships to a limited number of participants. Going forward, the goal is to create a broader range of scholarship offerings, including full-tuition awards. Scholarships provide opportunities for new, emerging, and mid-career practitioners in the book arts to advance their knowledge and skills. Scholarship participants are vital to and enriched by the PBI community, and promote the joyful spirit found at PBI. The annual auction, held at the finale of each event, has supported scholarships over the years and will continue to be an important source of scholarship funding. Augmented by new fundraising initiatives, PBI will be positioned to expand its scholarship opportunities.

To Offset Increasing Operational Expenses

From the outset, PBI has been concerned with keeping tuition as low as possible. In recent years, this has become even more challenging thanks to the rapid increase in costs for a number of things essential to the smooth running of PBI sessions including supplies, travel expenses, dining, and housing. Devoting a portion of annual fundraising to operational expenses will help mitigate these costs and help keep tuition costs reasonable for all participants.

To Ensure the Future of PBI

PBI is nothing less than magical. Programming offers comprehensive classes taught by instructors who are experts in their field. Unique to PBI, classes include participants with a variety of skill levels who also learn from each other in addition to their instructors. Participants leave with new knowledge about book arts, a life-long network of new friends and colleagues who share the same interests, and memories of lively discussions held during meals and relaxing evenings by a shared fire.the fire at the lagoon. We want to have the financial security to be certain the magic will endure.
